Following their dominating 55-17 rout of Virginia Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville, second-year Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry brought his team out to midfield at Scott Stadium for a team picture with the Commonwealth Cup.

Virginia didn’t seem too thrilled about it inside their empty stadium.

As the Hokies were celebrating becoming bowl-eligible at 6-6 and taking some pictures, the sprinklers came on. Coincidence? I think not. What happened when the game went final must not have sat well with Virginia.

Things have not gone too well for the Cavaliers in the battle for the Commonwealth Cup, but things started going downhill for them after they beat Duke last weekend. Freshman quarterback Anthony Colandrea made the bold prediction that the Cavaliers were going to beat the Hokies. It appears that the Virginia Tech defense heard that and had it drilled into their head all week by Pry and defensive coordinator Chris Marve. Following the game, Virginia coach Tony Elliott said he talked with his QB and it was a good teaching moment. I bet he doesn’t do that again.

They made Colandrea’s afternoon a frustrating one with a dominating performance in shutting down the Virginia offense. It may have been a cold shower for the Hokies, but I bet it felt great.

Virginia Tech fans storm Scott Stadium field after win

You can understand why Virginia might have been a little upset. They had a golden opportunity to put a dent into the Virginia Tech rebuild by beating them and not allowing them to get extra practices and a bowl game, but they were beaten soundly in all facets of the game.

When the clock struck triple zeros, Virginia Tech fans stormed the field like they were in Blacksburg.

It very well could have been a coincidence with the sprinklers, but you can’t do what Colandrea did and expect the Hokies and their fans to not respond. I’m willing to bet that during one of the five sacks, one or two Virginia Tech defensive players had something to say to him. College football is great and so are the rivalries. This season, this game had a little extra on the line for the Hokies and they were ready for the big stage and won.
