Virginia Tech Football: ESPN loves Hokies chances to be bowl-eligible
By Scott Roche
Two weeks remain in the college football regular season and it is a big two weeks for Virginia Tech. The Hokies sit at 5-5 and need to win their two remaining games to become bowl-eligible (something that ESPN loves), however, there is a path to finishing 5-7 and still getting a bowl game. That would require not enough teams qualifying with six wins, but let’s not go down the hole until we need to.
Sunday, College Football Network, released their bowl projections and had Virginia Tech playing SMU in the Military Bowl, a very interesting matchup against a future ACC opponent. ESPN released their latest bowl projections and the Hokies were once again matched up in a pair of games and it’s safe to say that their Power Football Index (PFI) like their chances of winning at least one more game and getting to six wins.
ESPN likes Virginia Tech’s chance of winning one more game
First and foremost, ESPN’s FPI gives the Hiokies an 80.8% chance of winning one more game and getting to the magic number of six wins. They give Brent Pry’s team a 30.9% chance of winning out and getting to seven wins.
Right now, six wins should be the goal, and win this week against North Carolina State, and worry about winning No. 7 at Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend. Of course, winning both games would be huge, but one game at a time.
ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach released their latest bowl projections following this past weekend’s results and both have the Hokies potentially playing a Power 5 school.
Boganura has Virginia Tech playing in the Lockhead Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 23 against Iowa State from the Big 12 in Forth Worth, Texas. Schlabach has the Hokies playing Tennessee out of the SEC in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 27 at Bank of America Stadium.
Getting their sixth win is priority No. 1 for Virginia Tech and once they do that, everything else will take care of itself. That starts this week against a very good 7-3 NC State team and the Hokies opened a a favorite in their final game of the season in Blacksburg.
