Early in their 48-22 win at Boston College Saturday, the Virginia Tech football team had some of their bigger offensive and defensive players step up.

Offensively, quarterback Kyron Drones was masterful in combining for 354 yards, 219 passing, and two touchdowns and he rushed for 135 yards. Running back Bhayshul Tuten rushed for just 78 yards, but he scored three touchdowns against the Eagles. Defensively, Dorian Strong had a pair of first-quarter interceptions of BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos that led to 10 points.

Virginia Tech got four underrated performances vs. Boston College

It was a total team effort for 60 minutes but lost in all of the bigger names on both sides of the ball were four underrated performances that played a hand in the impressive road win. Here are four players who quietly contributed to the Hokies’ first win away from Blacksburg this season.

Caleb Woodson

Woodson had one of his better performances this season, leading the Hokies in tackles with six, three solo. The freshman linebacker has 20 tackles this season and 10 solos for defensive coordinator Chris Marve.

Jaylen Jones

Jones had three solo tackles against the Eagles, however, it was a play on special teams that turned the game big time in favor of Virginia Tech. After Tuten’s first touchdown of the game, head coach Brent Pry called for an onside kick to stun Boston College and Jones was able to fall on the ball and get the Hokies another possession. They turned that into a Stephen Gosnell touchdown reception for a 17-3 lead in the second quarter.

Dae’Quan Wright

Wright had four receptions for 58 yards, but he had a one-handed highlight reel catch in the first quarter. Wright averaged 14.5 yards a reception against Boston College and his longest reception was 25 yards.

Malachi Thomas

Thomas had three carries for 38 yards, but 35 of those game on the first play of the fourth quarter when he took a handoff from Drones and raced to paydirt for a touchdown that all but ended the afternoon for the Eagles. After that, both teams emptied their benches and went well down into the depth chart to finish the game.

In the overall big picture, it was an impressive team performance from the Hokies, who need at least one more in the next two weeks to become bowl-eligible this season.
