There are still two huge games remaining for the Virginia Tech football team in 2023. After their dominating 48-22 victory over Boston College Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass. the Hokies are 5-5.

Their first road win of this season was needed and got them one step closer to their one big remaining goal for this season, becoming bowl-eligible and getting the extra practices and game in December to set the tone for next season under Brent Pry.

With two weeks left in the regular season and just under three weeks left until the conference championship games are played, the bowl projections for next month are getting more and more interesting by the week.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s remember that Virginia Tech needs to win one of its two remaining games, this upcoming Saturday at home against North Carolina State or Thanksgiving Weekend at Virginia. Now, with that said, there was a very interesting bowl projection released Sunday and it has the Hokies facing a future ACC opponent.

Bowl projection has Virginia Tech playing a new ACC opponent

Oliver Hodgkinson of College Football Network has Virginia Tech playing in the Fenway Bowl in Boston at historic Fenway Park on Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. against SMU. Yes, the SMU is part of the ACC expansion next season, and the Mustangs are an entertaining team, to say the least.

SMU is 8-2 this season with their two losses coming at the hands of Oklahoma and TCU. They are currently 6-0 in their final season in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and tied with Tulane. They don’t play them in the regular season and have two AAC games remaining at Memphis this weekend and then they host Navy next weekend.

SMU is an offensive juggernaut that can put up points and put them up fast. They dropped 69 on Tulsa, then put up 36 against a good Rice team and 45 this past weekend on North Texas.

Playing the Mustangs would be a fun game for Virginia Tech and their fans, but first things first, getting win No. 6 is priority No. 1 for Pey’s team beginning this weekend against a good NC State team.
