It was almost a whole calendar year between road victories, but the Virginia Tech football team was able to get a much-needed win away from Blacksburg Saturday, 48-22, over Boston College. It was a big win for second-year head coach Brent Pry and his team as it gets them back to even on the season at 5-5 and now they need one win in their final two weeks to become bowl-eligible.

It was a dominating performance from the Hokies from start to finish and they racked up 600 yards in total offense, easily their most impressive performance, home or away, in 2023. Following the game, Pry and others spoke to the media, and here is what they had to say, with a comment and opinion on the quotes.

Pry spoke about finally getting a road win this season.

"“It started this morning. They had a great look in their eye to change their circumstances.”"

Earlier this week, I wrote about Boston College being the road opponent that Virginia Tech needed. Despite their 6-3 record entering the game, they were not your average 6-3 Power 5 school. Factor in that Alumni Stadium is barely half full for most home games, the crowd was not going to be an issue like it was at Florida State and Louisville. If they had the look, it was going to be a good day.

Pry spoke about the gutsy onside kick decision at the end of the first quarter.

"“Stealing possessions against this group was important.”"

It was a call that needed to be made. The Eagles ran the ball at will downfield on Virginia Tech in their previous possession and trading touchdowns was not a game that Pry and his team wanted to play. Gusty call that gave his team all the momentum.

Pry talked about Grant Wells replacing Kyron Drones in the fourth quarter and ripping off a 58-yard run, only to fumble the ball out of the end zone for a touchback.

"“I hate that for Grant. It was a nice run. He saw the opening, got outside. He showed his speed. I think he got a little winded at the end. The ball was starting to float on him and he just couldn’t get it back in there.”"

It was a nice run, but it sums up the senior’s struggles this season with his play on the field and his injury.

Boston College coach Jeff Hafley on how physical the Hokies were.

"“We didn’t play like we have for the last six weeks. We got beat up pretty good today.”"

It was a physical performance from Virginia Tech on both sides of the ball. Their running backs and Drones ran through the BC defenders and the Hokies’ defense was physical all afternoon.

Drones spoke about bottling up the effort against Boston College and repeating it next week against NC State at home.

"“Just bring this energy that we had today onto the next home game, next week. We know it’s going to be our crowd so that’s exhilarating for us and we just gotta go 1-0 every week.”"

The Hokies are now one win away from becoming bowl-eligible and it would be in their best interest that they get that win next weekend at home against a very good Wolfpack team instead of leaving it up to the final game at Virginia as the Cavaliers have been playing teams very tough his season.
