Earlier this season, the Virginia Tech football team struggled on offense and a lot of that had to do with the play calling. Offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen was under scrutiny as the Hokies struggled to not only move the ball but score points and settle for field goals instead of finding the end zone.

After a loss at Marshall that dropped Virginia Tech to 1-3, Bowen redesigned the offense since then, it has taken off. The Hokies put up 38 points on Pittsburgh, 30 on Wake Forest, and 38 on Syracuse. In their lone loss so far in ACC play, they only managed 10 points from the offense, with seven coming from a 99-yard Bhayshul Tuten kick return.

Since the Hokies started putting points on the board, they have done it in multiple ways with Bowen getting creative. They’ll need more of that against Louisville this Saturday.

Virginia Tech needs Tyler Bowen to come up with more trick plays

Over the last month, Bowen had added reverses, misdirection plays, and read options and against Syracuse, running back Malachi Thomas threw a touchdown pass to Da’Quan Felton in the second quarter when Thomas drew the defense to him and threw a perfect ball to Felton behind the Orange defenders.

There is no doubt that Bowen will have something up his sleeve against Louisville with two extra days to prepare after playing on Thursday night. Jet sweeps are an option with the speedy wideouts Virginia Tech has and anything else he can come up with.

Louisville has to also prepare for the potential of a fake punt, which head coach Brent Pry had to be talked into against Wake Forest, but his team executed it perfectly and it turned the game around in the second half. Oh, and there’s Tucker Holloway and the punt return game as the Hokies’ kick returner is averaging over 18 yards a return after a big night against Syracuse.

There are plenty of things the Cardinals need to prepare for this week, but Tech could use some more trickery from Bowen and throw a different wrinkle at Louisville, something they haven’t seen yet. Everything should be on the table this week.
