Coming out of their bye week, the Virginia Tech football team was looking to continue to establish the running game. In the first three ACC games since dropping three out of four non-conference games, offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and head coach Brent Pry have committed to the. run and it has paid off.

In their dominating wins over Pittsburgh and Wake Forest, the running game was very good. Even in their loss to Florida State, the running game had its moments against one of the top defenses in the country. Thursday night against Syracuse, the Hokies once again committed to the run and it was a big part in their win. After the game, however, Pry’s quote about the running game was going overboard, just a little.

Brent Pry got caught up in the moment

Emotions in football are huge. Very big. Following the 38-10 victory, the second-year head coach had his emotions get the best of him when he answered a question in his press conference when talking about running backs Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas.

“I think we’ve got the best 1-2 punch in the country,” said Pry. “Bhayshul comes out and Malachi is back to a level think everyone knew Malachi to be. Really proud what the running backs are doing.”

The best 1-2 punch in the country? Don’t get me wrong, the emergence of the running game has been huge, however, to put them in a category as the best 1-2 punch in the country is going overboard a bit. Against the Orange, Tuten rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown, while Thomas scampered for 87. Not to be outdone, quarterback Kyron Drones rushed for 56.

There are going to be many factors going forward if Virginia Tech is going to become bowl-eligible. Right at the top of that list is going to be how successful they are in the running game and being able to hand the ball to Tuten and Thomas and get the results they did Thursday night is going to be key.

They are forming a good duo for a football team in a rebuild, but to call them the best 1-2 punch in the country is going a little far. They have had success against three of the teams in the bottom third of the ACC standings. Now it’s time if they want to be in the conversation as one of the best 1-2 punches in the country, they need to have another game like they have recently, this time on the road, at Louisville next Saturday.
