Busting Brackets, the FanSided site that is wall-to-wall college basketball coverage recently released their annual list ranking all Division 1 men’s basketball head coaches prior to the 2023-24 regular season. Respected college basketball contributor Joey Loose recently ranked all D1 coaches.

Mike Young has had the Virginia Tech program respectable and is either in or on the cusp of making the NCAA Tournament.

Where does Mike Young rank among Division 1 coaches?

Prior to last season, Mike Young was ranked 44th on the list and this season, but this season the Hokies bench boss checks in at No. 45. Here is what Loose had to say about Young, a veteran Division 1 coach.

"Native to Radford, Virginia, Young had his best coaching work down in South Carolina, spending three decades on staff at Wofford. He was an assistant for thirteen years before earning the Terriers’ top job in 2002, leading the program to the NCAA Tournament five times, including a win in his final season. Virginia Tech summoned him back to his home state in 2019 and he’s done pretty decent work, taking the Hokies to the Big Dance twice, though last season ended with an 11th place finish in the ACC and an NIT bid.Joey Loose, Busting Brackets"

This season the Hokies return guard Sean Pedulla as Virginia Tech looks to get back to the NCAA Tournament after settling for an NIT bid last season after finishing 11th in the ACC during the regular season. Recently, Young and his staff hit it big in the recruiting trail landing four-star forward Ryan Jones from Florida, who decided on coming to the Hokies rather than staying in his hometown of Gainesville with the Florida Gators.

The ACC is loaded this season with talented teams and Young and his team will have their work cut out for them looking to move up in the standings.
