When the Virginia Tech football team opened the 2023 season on Labor Day Weekend with a 36-17 victory over Old Dominion, spirits were high in Blacksburg. Then came the next three weeks and it was about as frustrating as it has been in a long time for Hokies’ fans.

Three consecutive non-conference losses to Purdue, Rutgers, and Marshall had them sitting at 1-3 and in danger of beginning ACC play in trouble. Instead, the Hokies took advantage of the first conference game and in what felt like a new beginning to the season, played as complete of a 60-minute game as they have in the Brent Prt era in a 38-21 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers.

On both sides of the ball, Virginia Tech put together an effort that was long overdue. The offense put up big plays against a Pittsburgh team that was dealing with their own injuries. Quarterback Kyron Drones played very well in his third start in a Hokies’ uniform and his skilled players made plays for him.

Defensively the Hokies forced a key turnover and pressured Panthers quarterback Phil Jurkovec, a sixth-year transfer, and made him look like a true freshman. In the overall big picture, it was a win that was much-needed for Virginia Tech before they hit the road this upcoming weekend with a trip to Florida State. Here are three big overreactions from Tech’s win that improved them to 2-3 on the season as the calendar flips to October.
