Virginia Tech Basketball: 4-star recruit passes on coming to Blacksburg
By Scott Roche
The 2023-24 college basketball season is just around the corner. Virginia Tech will look to rebound from a loss in last season’s NIT and get back to the NCAA Tournament under coach Mike Young. Saturday, the Hokies coach got some news that was not good.
Four-star forward Micah Robinson decided to pass on coming to Blacksburg and instead will head to Texas to attend TCU and play for former Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon. Robinson chose the Horned Frogs over the Hokies, LSU, and Vanderbilt.
Robinson is a 6-foot-6 forward from Oak Hill Academy and is the 75th overall recruit in ESPN’s Top 100. He is a long and athletic wing who would have been a huge get for Young and his staff in the Class of 2024. He can shoot the ball, score from the outside, get into the paint and finish. His athleticism is off the charts.
Robinson recently spoke about attending Virginia Tech, a school that he said started scouting him in his junior season. He spoke about the Hokies’ lack of wings and the lack of finishing ability at the rim as a reason why they were heavily in on him with assistant coach J.D. Byers.
Hokies looking to add more to the Class of 2024
In late August, Young got a commitment from Tyler Johnson, a three-star recruit from Florida. The Oak Ridge Class of 2024 small forward is 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds and will add to Virginia Tech’s small forward depth next season. Getting Robinson to join him in Blacksburg would have been a huge addition.
After that, it’s back to the drawing board for Young and his staff following Robinson’s announcement. It’s clear that wing depth is needed for the future and it is clear that the coaching staff is looking to make it a priority.
