The news on the Virginia Tech defense has been rough lately with injuries through the first three weeks of the 2023 season. With at least nine weeks remaining in the season, there is still a lot to look forward to for the Hokies.

One thing is clear for the future, there are needs that need to be added everywhere by coach Brent Pry when it comes to recruiting.  A former defensive coordinator at Penn State under James Franklin, he knows that the recruiting trail is vital for the future of his program. One of his commits was recently ranked in the top 10 by On3 Recruits.

Virginia Tech commit ranks in the top 10 for 2024 linebackers

The 2024 linebacker class is loaded. One local recruit, Chris Cole, decided to attend the University of Georgia instead of coming to Blacksburg, one of his six final choices. On3 Recruits has him ranked third for their linebackers, but the good news for Hokies fans is commit Gabriel Williams is ranked seventh on the list.

Williams is the type of player who can come in and start right away and make an immediate impact for the Hokies. He is listed as 6-foot-4 but has a 6-foot-7 wing span and is one of the more promising recruits who’s committed to Virginia Tech.

The Washington, D.C. native plays at St. Vincent Pallotti High School and is a four-star recruit, but he can’t help the Hokies in 2023. This week they play at Marshall and hope to have Alan Tisdale back at linebacker against the Thundering Hurd, but stopping the run is going to be key.

The biggest miss in recruiting has been Cole, whom Pry and the Hokies went after very hard, including a helicopter trip on Labor Day Weekend to see him play the night before the season-opener against Old Dominion.
