One of the biggest negatives out of last Saturday’s 24-17 loss to Purdue at Lane Stadium for Virginia Tech was an injury to transfer wide receiver Ali Jennings on the Hokies opening possession. He had his left ankled rolled upon by fellow wide receiver Jaylin Lane after a completion from quarterback Grant Wells.

He left the game, did not return, and was spotted leaving the locker room during the second weather delay of the game. After the game, coach Brent Pry did not comment on the extent of his injury, but his update Tuesday at his media availability does not paint a great picture.

Pry ruled Jennings out as Virginia Tech travels to Rutgers on Saturday

At his weekly media session, the second-year coach said that Jennings is ruled out of the game against the Scarlet Knights. According to Pry, he will be reevaluated next week.

That’s not a promising update for a team that has struggled on offense to begin the season and Jennings had been their biggest playmaker in the first game of the season against Old Dominion. He finished with 72 yards receiving on five receptions and two touchdowns in the 36-17 win over the Monarchs.

Once Jennings went out, the passing game suffered a bit for Virginia Tech. Lane came up big in the first half, but he also got injured, but if there is some good news, it’s that he was listed on the Hokies’ depth chart for this weekend against Rutgers.

It’s still unclear as to who Pry will start at quarterback, but whoever gets the call, Wells or Kyron Drones, they are going to miss at least Jennings, the one big downfield threat they have. Regardless of who plays, Tech needs to find a way to get the running game going after finishing with just 11 yards against the Boilermakers. Here’s hoping that Jennings is able to take the field again this season.
