There is a lot going on in Blacksburg with the 2023 fall athletic season fully underway. In this edition of Virginia Tech News, fans step up for a second consecutive weekend to support the football team, the women’s soccer notches an important non-conference win, and more.

Virginia Tech announces Purdue football game is sold out

Last week, Virginia Tech announced that the season opener against Old Dominion was sold out and the fans are showing up again, this time on Saturday against Purdue. On Thursday, it was announced that the game against the Boilermakers is sold out at Lane Stadium.

This is a big game for the Hokies in terms of looking to continue to build momentum after last week’s 36-17 win over the Monarchs. Aside from not having Nick Gallo, Virginia Tech is about as healthy as they can be in a game where they are a -3 point favorite to win. Purdue is coming off of a 39-35 upset loss at home to Fresno State last weekend.

Women’s soccer beats Navy

A first-half goal from Natalie Mitchell off a pass from Samantha DeGuzman lifted the women’s soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference win over Navy. The goal was scored in the 4th minute and was Mitchell’s third of the season and DeGuzman’s second assist.

It was the fifth clean sheet already this season for the Hokies and keeper Alia Skinner stopped four shots as Virginia Tech improved to 3-1-3. Sunday, the Hokies play their final early season non-conference match when they host Northwestern at 1:30.

Volleyball remains undefeated with a win over Lehigh

The Hokies volleyball team improved to 7-0 for the first time since 2018 with a 3-0 win over Lehigh in the opening match of the Lehigh Invitational. After winning the first two matches, 25-18, and 25-21, they went into a tiebreaker in the third match 27-25.
