Virginia Tech Football: Pry hoping to make teams plan for this
By Scott Roche
When Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry announced that quarterback Grant Wells won the job in training camp, the second-year coach made it clear that Baylor transfer Kyron Drones was also going to some action.
In the season opener against Old Dominion, Drones played in the first half, but because of the game Wells was having after settling in, Pry stuck with his senior QB for the entire second half. He went with the hot hand against the Monarchs, however, expect to see Drones at some point this Saturday against Purdue.
Pry wants opponents to plan for multiple quarterbacks
Pry spoke earlier this week and said that he wants teams to have to prepare for both Wells and Drones each week saying, “The approach right now would be exactly the same.”
Drones is a dual-threat quarterback and that was on display against Old Dominion. In the first quarter when the Hokies got into Monarchs territory, Pry sent Drones into the game. His first play was a swing pass to Tuiten and he drew a targeting call on Old Dominion linebacker Amorie Morrison that drew a 15-yard flag. When Virginia Tech got down toward the goal line, he called some running plays for height weight and he came up short. So did the Hokies as a fourth down pass by Wells turned the ball over on downs.
If there is one area that Purdue is vulnerable it is with the passing game. Their cornerbacks were beaten all afternoon by Fresno State and that can play right into the hands of the Hokies. If Virginia Tech can Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane, and Da’Quan Felton involved in the passing game, then that can open up the option and running game for Drones.
Playing two quarterbacks is the way to go if you have two quarterbacks you have confidence in and it gives the other teams wrinkles to prepare for. If Pry goes that route, he’ll need to ride the hot hand in the second half like he did last week with Wells.
