Wednesday was a big day for Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young and his staff. Not yet having a commitment from the 2024 class, the Hokies secured their first one and it’s a big one in Tyler Johnson.

Johnson chose Virginia Tech for his collegiate career

Three-star small forward Tyler Johnson from Oak Ridge in Orlando, Florida announced on Twitter that he will attend Virginia Tech and he becomes the first commit for the 2024 class for Young.

Johnson was offered a scholarship in July by the Hokies after a standout performance at the Peach Jam for the Florida Rebels. He averaged 11 points, almost five rebounds, two steals and two assists in the tournament. He has a strong midrange game and with work, can become a nice outside shooter. Offensively he attacks the basket and plays above the rim, something that Virginia Tech has been looking for.

Johnson, who is 6-foot-6, brings some versatility and is extremely athletic and spent this past weekend in Blacksburg before making his decision.

He is the 19th-ranked player in Florida and the 47th-ranked small forward according to 247Sports. He chose Virginia Tech over Illinois, Clemson, Texas Tech, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Appalachian State, Hofstra, Drake, and the University of Central Florida.

This is just the first of what Young hopes is going to be a strong recruiting class for 2024. Getting Johnson to commit instead of him adding at Clemson is a win-win just in terms of the Atlantic Coast Conference and he chose Virginia Tech over last season’s Final Four participant Florida Atlantic.

The Hokies are looking to bounce back in 2023-24 after missing the NCAA Tournament last season, but also looking ahead to the future and Johnson you figure will be a big part of it after this season and beyond under Young.
