Virginia Tech kicks off the 2023 football season Saturday night at Lane Stadium against Old Dominion at 8 p.m.

This season the Hokies have an odd schedule. They will play their four non-conference games in September before playing their eight Atlantic Coast Conference games. Their non-conference schedule is Old Dominion and Purdue at home, with road games against Rutgers and Marshall. It could be a lot worse in terms of the Big Ten Conference teams they play and in terms of the season opener, they will be looking for revenge against Old Dominion for a season-opening loss last season.

Second-year coach Brent Pry added some wide receivers from the transfer portal for quarterback Grant Wells who was recently named the starter, while transfer Kyron Drones from Baylor will also see time.

On the defensive side, the Hokies have to replace linebacker Dax Hollifield and they will need their cornerbacks to quickly get their feet wet ahead of ACC play. Once they get to conference play, they are going to see some quarterbacks who can throw the ball.

Before the season starts, here are three teams on the Hokies 2023 schedule that are overrated and should be a better matchup for Tech this season.
