Virginia Tech recently announced their 2023-24 non-conference men’s basketball opponents and it’s a slate that will be challenging for Mike Young as he enters his fifth season as head coach.

Six of the 11 non-conference games will be at home, while the Hokies will spend Thanksgiving in Orlando, Fla.

Virginia Tech men’s non-conference schedule offers interesting matchups

Here is the non-conference schedule announced by the school,

  • Nov. 6: vs. Coppin State
  • Nov. 10: vs. South Carolina in Charlotte, N.C.
  • Nov. 15: vs. Campbell
  • Nov. 19: vs. Wofford
  • Nov. 23: vs. Boise State
  • Nov. 24: vs. Iowa State or VCU
  • Nov. 26: TBD
  • Nov. 29: at Auburn
  • Dec. 9: vs. Valparaiso
  • Dec. 16: vs. Vermont
  • Dec. 21: vs. American

There are a lot of interesting matchups for Young and his basketball team before Atlantic Coast Conference play starts in late December. They get two games against Southeastern Conference schools in South Carolina in the Hall of Fame Series in Charlotte, then play at Auburn as part of the ACC/SEC challenge. The Hokies will spend their Thanksgiving in Orlando, Fla. from Nov. 23-26 playing in the ESPN Events Invitational with three games in four days beginning Thanksgiving Day against Boise State.

American East Conference powerhouse Vermont visits Blacksburg in December and the Catamounts will be a tough opponent as they are either an NCAA Tournament team on a yearly basis or an NIT team. Coppin State, Campbell, Valparaiso, American University, and Wofford will also visit the Hokies ahead of ACC play. The Wafford matchup will be the first for Young against his former school where he spent 17 seasons.

Their 20 ACC games will be announced at a later date. Having success in the non-conference games will be key for Tech as they are looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing in 2023. They made it 2021 and 2022 under Young, but last season they had to settle for an NIT bid and lost in the first round, 81-72, on the road to the University of Cincinnati.
