The Virginia Tech Hokies are hard at work wrapping up their final workouts ahead of their annual spring football game on April 22nd. All eyes were, as expected, solely set on the 2017 football season, which will kickoff on Sunday, September 3rd against the West Virginia Mountaineers at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.

While 2017 remains the focus, there was an exciting scheduling announcement made by the Virginia Tech athletic department on Thursday, as the school confirmed that the Hokies will be kicking off the 2018 campaign on the road in Tallahassee against the Florida State Seminoles. The showdown will take place on Labor Day night in prime time on ESPN.

The news of the potential match-up was first reported on Tuesday by Warchant.com, and was also reported by Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times on Wednesday.

At the time the game takes place in September of 2018, it will be the third time in four seasons that the Hokies have played a prime time game on the weekend of Labor Day.

The other games include the 2015 season opener on Labor Day night against Ohio State in Blacksburg, and as mentioned, the impending Labor Day Eve game against the Mountaineers this coming September.

The scheduled 2018 game between Virginia Tech and Florida State will be the first match-up between the two schools since 2012, which ended with a 28-22 victory by the E.J. Manuel-led Seminoles in Blacksburg.

While it is still early, with plenty left to be sorted out for potential ACC opponents in 2018 for the Hokies, here is what the schedule is looking like at this juncture, nearly a year and a half in advance:

No matter how the rest of the schedule shakes out, the 2018 slate already looks as enticing as we’ve seen in quite some time for the Hokies.

It will be interesting to see how the conference fills the rest of the schedule, but for now, the prospects of playing both Florida State and Notre Dame on the national stage have fans buzzing about the future.
