The Virginia tech basketball team gets a huge road win, beating Georgia Tech 78-77.

Are you kidding me!?? Can this Hokie team be stopped? Well yes, probably by a Duke or UNC, but Virginia Tech keeps rolling through their ACC schedule. They’re now 4-1 in conference play after a one point thriller of a win at Georgia Tech yesterday. Their four ACC wins has doubled the total they had last year.

But it didn’t look good most of the game. Georgia Tech got off to a quick 12-2 lead and would hold a ten point lead at half. It didn’t seem like the Hokies were going to gain much ground until midway through the second half. Both teams were trading points, the Hokies got it within three or four several times, but Georgia tech would go on a spurt and get well ahead each time. That is until the final couple of minutes. The Hokies would continue to battle and make plays in the last few minutes to take the lead, and make their free throws to bury the Yellow Jackets. The one point win was pretty accurate of how close the final few minutes were.

Zach LeDay has continued to progress and show up in big games. He had 21 points, 4 blocks, and 7 rebounds. Georgia Tech couldn’t quick figure out how to handle him, but then again no one really has the last few games. Guard play could have been a bit better. Justin Bibbs was held to 8 points after coming off the best game of his career against Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech’s Marcus Georges-Hunt put up an impressive 27 points on the Hokie defense. The Hokies 78% free throw shooting was definitely the difference. Getting 28 points off of free throws was a gift the Hokies needed.

The Hokies did struggle a bit with transitioning. Georgia Tech pushed the pace on turnovers and Virginia Tech didn’t seem to be able to respond quick enough to slow them down. It led to a lot of easy Georgia Tech buckets early. Thankfully, the Hokies cut down on turnovers in the second half, which was a major factor in their comeback.

What this means as far as their season is concerned, is that they are well on their way to a winning season. I said that they need to win two of the three game stretch they’re on against unranked opponents… well they’re 2-0 going into their game at Notre Dame. A win in South Bend would be huge. It was great to see a Tech team that has gotten blown out several times this season after going down early, continue to battle, tough it out, and end up earning the win against a very good Georgia Tech team, who also beat #4 Virginia just a week ago.

The Hokies are well on their way to a winning season. This is no time for complacency though, and Notre Dame should be a huge step in the right direction if they should earn the dub.

Tip off at Notre Dame is Wednesday night at 7:00 PM ET. Go Hokies!
