The In-State Longshot: South Florida

South Florida is a surprise finalist for Dwayne Lawson especially since USF has had a few rough seasons. However, USF assistant Raymond Woodie has done a great job of at least giving USF a chance though it is definitely not a very good chance.

The biggest appeal for USF for Lawson would be the fact that he would almost certainly get the chance to play immediately as Willie Taggart tries to turn around USF. USF is also the only in-state finalists for Lawson so they have the proximity to home advantage as well.

The issues for South Florida start with the fact that they play in the American Athletic Conference. Lawson would play a much weaker schedule, and USF has nowhere near the prestige that any of his other finalists have.

USF has also only won 6 games in the last two seasons despite the fact that they are in the AAC. USF did improve from 2 to 4 wins this season in Taggart’s second season, but his other finalists had more wins with tougher schedules. USF also has not been to a bowl game since 2010 which definitely hurts also.

USF also does not have great fan support though part of that is due to the struggles of the program over the last few seasons. Lawson is extremely unlikely to go to USF, but the in-state connection makes it a small possibility.

Chance: 1%
