Ohio State and Notre Dame

For much of the process, the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish seemed like the favorites to get 4-star wide receiver Lawrence Cager. Both of these teams received official visits from Cager and many analysts believed that the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish were near the top of his list.

Of course, Ohio State has the potential to be the top ranked team in the country to start next season depending on how they finish this season, and what players from the top teams leave for the NFL. The Buckeyes have also had their fair share of recent success under Urban Meyer while Meyer also has a reputation as a winner.

Notre Dame has had a fair amount of success under head coach Brian Kelly which includes one national championship appearance in the BCS era. The Fighting Irish also still have a great brand name reputation across college football.

These two programs seemed like two of the top contenders until news broke that showed a different list of top contenders with these two programs out of the hunt.

All indications suggest that the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish have no shot in a recruiting battle that has had its fair share of twists and turns. For the other teams still left, it is definitely a relief not having to deal with Urban Meyer and Brian Kelly as top contenders for Cager.
