2 Truths & a Lie Through Virginia Tech Football's First 10 Games
By Scott Roche
If there was a college football team that needed a bye week this, it’s Virginia Tech. After a 24-14 loss to Clemson on Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium, the Hokies are 5-5 and still need one more win to become bowl-eligible. Their first shot at their sixth win of the season comes on Nov. 23 at Duke.
After another disappointing loss, this time to the Tigers, the Hokies have some soul-searching to do from the players to the coaches in an attempt to save their season and extend it past Virginia on Nov. 30. Ten games through the season, here are two truths and a lie about Tech’s season to date.
Truth: The 2024 season is already a disappointment
Virginia Tech can beat Duke, Virginia, and win their bowl game to finish 8-5, but the season would still be considered a disappointment. After going 7-6 last season, finishing the season strong, and getting all the retainment they got, to improve by just one game would disappointing, to say the least.
It’s not that Virginia Tech has lost five games, it’s how they have. Blown leads in the final two minutes of games, not being prepared and ready to start games, lack of adjustments in-game and so many more reasons. This season has not played out the way many thought it would.
Truth: Virginia Tech continues to beat up on lesser opponents
Virginia Tech’s wins this season are over Marshall, Old Dominion, Boston College, Stanford, and Georgia Tech. Ok, so the win over the Yellow Jackets sticks out above all the other ones after they beat Miami and knocked them from the ranks of the unbeaten this past weekend.
In Virginia Tech's defense, they should have beaten Miami as the call should have never been overturned because there was no indisputable video evidence to change it. Syracuse and Clemson were very winnable games and Vanderbilt looks like a little better of a loss, but one that shouldn't have happened. Rutgers? Yikes. The only "good team" they have beat is Georgia Tech. Not what you want to see in a rebuild.
Lie: Virginia Tech will become bowl-eligible
As Lee Corso of ESPN would say, “Not so fast my friend.’’ With the way that the first 10 games have played out and injuries piling up, can you trust them to go on the road and beat a 7-3 Duke team? Virginia is playing a lot better this year and is not the layup that many thought they would be back when the season started.
Will they win a game? They should, but if there is one thing we’ve learned about the Hokies this season, expect the unexpected. I want to believe they get it done and I do think they get it done, but until they do it, there is plenty of reason to doubt that it does get done.
