2 Reasons the Virginia Tech Football Team Becomes Bowl Eligible, 1 Reason They Won’t
By Scott Roche
It's hard to believe, but just two games are remaining in the 2024 season for the Virginia Tech football team. A disappointing 5-5, the Hokies need one win in their final two games, at Duke and at home against Virginia, both in primetime on the ACC Network.
It’s hard to believe that we are here in 2024 with Virginia Tech, but here we are. Needing one win to extend their season beyond Virginia in a season where the expectations were a lot higher. With that said, here are two reasons the Hokies become bowl-eligible and one reason they won’t.
Virginia Tech becomes bowl-eligible because they win a one-score game
It has to happen sooner or later, right? Virginia Tech wins a one-score game under this coaching staff. They have lost nearly every game, but sooner or later they will get one. Both games that remain are games that could certainly come down to the end and they get one.
Virginia Tech is still a favorite against Duke, which is surprising, but getting a stop on defense or getting a touchdown late in the game instead of a field goal to be the difference has to happen. They can’t have this futility in close games forever.
Virginia Tech becomes bowl-eligible because there is just too much talent not to
Players have underperformed this season and so have the coaches. Despite all of that and all of the injuries the Hokies, there is again, just too much talent to finish 5-7. Can they really go from a 12-team College Football Playoff dark horse to missing a bowl game, no matter how big or small, in just three months? It’s possible, but it would be stunning, even for the way this season has gone, if it were to happen.
Virginia Tech doesn’t become bowl-eligible because adjustments still aren’t being made
After losing to Clemson, Brent Pry said that they were going to have to look long and hard during their bye week at the lack of adjustments that are being made. Waiting until after 10 games to rake a deep dive is odd, but adjustments have to be made. The offense has shown signs with Tyler Bowen of making some adjustments, but as an overall whole, it needs to be more, and if it isn’t, then losing both games is a real possibility.
