Stop me if you have heard this before this year, the Virginia Tech football team faces a must-win on Saturday night. No, seriously, just two weeks into the season, and things are so bad that fans were calling for Brent Pry to be fired after last Saturday night's loss to Vanderbilt at home, 44-20.

At 0-2, if the Hokies are going to try and salvage anything from the 2025 season, they win their final two non-conference games beginning this weekend against Old Dominion at Lane Stadium. Here are two reasons why the Hokies will win the game and one reason why they won't.

2 reasons Virginia Tech beats Old Dominion

Kyron Drones outplays Colton Joseph

Two teams that turn the ball over a lot are going to meet in Blacksburg, and there are bound to be turnovers from both teams. Two teams with running quarterbacks who have been known to fumble the ball a lot, you get the feeling whoever turns it over more will leave with a loss. Kyron Drones has 12 fumbles in 22 games, while ODU's Colton Joseph has fumbled it 10 times in 10 games. Whoever wins the rushing numbers between the two will lead their team to a win.

Virginia Tech comes out dominates early and puts ODU is a deep hole

The common theme in the Hokies' wins over the Monarchs, for the most part, is that they have been blowouts decided before the fourth quarter. The one time recently it wasn't, well, you know how it ended. Got a feeling that the Hokies come out looking to make a statement and build on it against ODU. As long as we're not looking at a late one-score game, it should be good. However, with the way the first two weeks have gone, anything is possible.

1 reason Virginia Tech loses to Old Dominion

It's end up being a one-score game

By now, you know that Brent Pry and one-score games don't go together. The Hokies' fourth-year coach has one win in 13 tries, and if this game ends up being close, you know what's going to creep into the minds of Virginia Tech fans. Virginia Tech opened as nearly a double-digit favorite, depending on where you get your odds from, but with the way things tend to go for Tech lately, this has all the makings of a one-score game. Look out.
