We have made it to Selection Sunday for the 2025 NCAA men's basketball tournament. No, we will not see or hear Virginia Tech called shortly after 6 p.m. after the Hokies struggled through a 13-19 2024-25 season.
However, some former Hokies will see their schools' names come across the TV for this season's 68-team field. Last season, Virginia Tech missed out on an at-large bid and had to settle for an NIT bid, beating Richmond before falling in the second round to Ohio State. With the Selection Show. tonight, it got us thinking, when was the last time Virginia Tech won an NCAA Tournament game?
When was the last time Virginia Tech won an NCAA Tournament game?
Overall, Virginia Tech owns an 8-13 NCAA Tournament record and the last time they were in, they fell in the first-round of the East Regional, 81-73, to Texas in Milwaukee as the 11th-seed. The season before that in 2021 as the 10th-seed, they fell in overtime to No. 7 Florida in the South Regional.
The last time the Hokies won an NCAA Tournament game was pre-COVID in 2019. As the fourth-seed in the East Regional, they took down No. 13 Saint Louis, 66-52, then dispatched No. 12 Liberty, 67-58, in the second round in San Jose. In the Sweet Sixteen, they lost to top-seeded Duke, 75-73, in Washington, D.C.
That run was under former coach Buzz Williams, who is going to lead his Texas A&M squad into this season's tournament again. Under Mike Young, the Hokies are 0-2 with losses in 2021 and 2022. The latter run to the NCAA Tournament was their magical run through the ACC Tournament as the No. 7 seed to win the championship.
It's another year without the Hokies heading to the NCAA Tournament, but Young has pledged to get the program back to where fans expect it and if the rumor is true about him having a bigger NIL package and he can retain some of the young talent he had this year, then just maybe they could be back to the big dance sooner rather than later.
