This season saw the College Football Playoff expand to 12 teams and at the beginning of the season, Virginia Tech was a national favorite to be a sleeper to crash the party. That did not come to fruition as Tech stumbled through a disappointing 6-6 that saw them needing to beat Virginia Thanksgiving Weekend just to become bowl-eligible. The Hokies have yet to play their bowl game and won't for another week, which is key when it comes to the portal officially closing for them.
Virginia Tech portal window closes after Duke's Mayo Bowl
As far as Virginia Tech and the portal window goes, it doesn't close for them until five days after the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Jan. 3 against Minnesota in Charlotte, which would be Jan. 8. According to Pete Nakos of On3, the portal window remains open past the Dec. 28 date for schools five days following their bowl games. That means whichever two teams play in the CFP title game in late January, the portal remains open until the end of the month.
Virginia Tech has been getting some commitments from players in the portal and they had their latest entry Sam Brumfield on Thursday night, who enters for the second season in a row after coming over from Middle Tennessee State last December.
