After suffering a devastating, 75-74, overtime loss at home on Thursday night to Stanford, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team finds themselves squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Charlie Creme's latest release on Friday has the Hokies as the last team in the field, but hanging on by a thread.
On Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum, Virginia Tech will play their final regular season home game when they host California in a must-win. The final three games against Cal and road games at Boston College and Clemson are must-win games. Not only are they that for the NCAA Tournament, but also to get a bye on the first day of the ACC Tournament in a couple of weeks and avoid playing on the first day.
Virginia Tech to host California in final regular season home game
Following the loss to Stanford, first-year Virginia Tech coach Megan Duffy pointed the finger at why they blew a second-half double-digit lead to the Cardinal and lost by a point in Blacksburg. If they are going to rebound against the Golden Bears, they will need to do it rebounding, moving the ball on offense, and being connected on the defensive end, something they were not in the second half on Thursday night.
This is the first ACC meeting between the two schools after SMU, Stanford, and California joined the ACC this season and the Golden Bears are coming in off a, 76-70, victory over Virginia on Thursday night in Charlottesville.
This will also be the final home game in the regular season for seniors Matlida Ekh and Rose Micheaux. Both transfers have been a huge addition to the program not only last season, though Micheaux was behind Elizabeth Kitley and Clara Strack, and been vital pieces as leaders in Duffy's first campaign at Tech. Getting them a win in their final games in Blacksburg would be fitting. Aside from being broadcast on the ACC Network, the game can also be seen on FuboTV.
