After having a much-needed bye this past weekend, the Virginia Tech football team will return to the field on a short week when they travel to Dallas, Texas, on Friday night for a pivotal game at SMU. Both teams go into the game with two conference losses, and this is all but an elimination game in terms of reaching the ACC Championship Game next month in Charlotte.

When we last saw the Hokies and James Franklin, they were walking off the field at Clemson with a 20-16 come-from-behind win over Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. The win made Virginia Tech bowl-eligible, something that James Franklin said was going to be the standard moving forward in Blacksburg each year.

SMU comes into the game off a stunning 30-27 win at Syracuse on Saturday afternoon when the Orange completed a late-game rally over the Mustangs. Head coach Rhett Lashley has a tough job this week for his club, helping them turn the page after a tough loss and having to do it in a short week.

This is the first time the Hokies and Mustangs will meet on the football field since SMU joined the ACC a couple of seasons ago. Since Stanford, Cal, and SMU have joined the ACC, the Hokies have played Cal twice and will host Stanford next weekend in Blacksburg in the second meeting between the new conference foes. In fact, this game wasn't supposed to be on the schedule this season, but once the ACC went to 10 power conference games this season, Virginia Tech dropped James Madison, and the conference added SMU. This means that all six Hokies' road games this season are against Power 4 Conference schools.

Aside from Boston College, California, Clemson, SMU, and Miami in ACC play, the Hokies visited Maryland earlier this year and took down the Terrapins, 35-26, in September.

This is going to be the second of three daunting road tasks for Virginia Tech to end the 2026 road portion of their regular season slate as they head to South Florida on Nov. 21 to face the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes. Before we get that far ahead, here is a breakdown of all the information needed for Friday night's game in Dallas.
