It wouldn't be a Virginia Tech football season without some heartbreak, would it? That was what happened last Friday night at Lane Stadium. Trailing Pittsburgh 35-33 with three seconds left, the Hokies got the ball in field goal range for kicker John Love to attempt a game-winning 36-yard field goal. However, his kick sailed left, and the Panthers left Blacksburg with a two-point victory.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech to 4-1 in James Franklin's first season in charge, and what a win that would have been. However, the Hokies were left heartbroken after dominating most categories, but four turnovers and penalties proved to be too much to overcome against a banged-up Pitt club.

As if that loss wasn't bad enough, the Hokies now must pack up and head to Northern California for a game on Saturday afternoon against a Cal team that is 2-3 and coming off a loss at UNLV this past weekend. There are a lot of questions surrounding both teams in terms of injuries, but this is going to be a huge gut-check for Virginia Tech at the midway point of the season in terms of bouncing back and being resilient. Here is a rundown of key information that is needed for Saturday's game.
