After a short week, the Virginia Tech football team will host Vanderbilt, looking to pick up a win in what is as must-win as you can get in a Week 2 game. After dropping their season-opener, 24-11, to No. 10 South Carolina, the Hokies need a win badly for some reasons.
The good news is that Virginia Tech is playing the first of seven home games this season and a signature win under Brent Pry against an up-and-coming Commodores' team that is coming off a rout of Charleston Southern in their season-opener last weekend. When the line opened at DraftKings, Virginia Tech was a 3.5 favorite; it went down to 1.5 during the week.

Virginia Tech vs. Vanderbilt: Prediction
Scott Roche - Virginia Tech 28, Vanderbilt 24: This has the feel of a game that will go down to the end and be a one-score game. In my bold predictions earlier this week, I predicted the Hokies would win a one-score game, and I'm sticking to that. This is a golden chance for Brent Pry to pick up a one-score win and change the narrative a little when it comes to that. It'll also take some of the heat off of him with two very winnable games, Old Dominion and Wofford, coming up on the schedule. Expect Kyron Drones to bounce back and Sam Siefkes to come up with a game plan for Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia.
Adam Firebaugh - Virginia Tech 31, Vanderbilt 17: Offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery has seen a thing or two in his time. He gets Drones and Co. back on the right track, opening up the run game to facilitate mismatches on the outside against the Commodores’ secondary. Siefkes’ unit goes back to work and continues to get after Pavia, though they don’t contain him entirely. Historically, Pry has done well in night games at home, winning games by multiple scores. The stakes of losing this one are just too high, and the Hokies win a game against a non-conference Power 4 opponent at home for the first time since 2009.
