In three days, on Jan. 2, the Transfer Portal window will open for college football, and this year, there will only be one portal, nothing in the spring. As expected, things are going to pick up over the next couple of days leading into the portal opening.
Virginia Tech has already had some players who made their intentions clear that they are going to enter the portal, while others are rumored to be leaving Blacksburg. It shouldn't come as a surprise that some of them are leaving with new coach James Franklin on board. On Tuesday, another player is rumored to be entering the portal.
Virginia Tech TE Zeke Wimbush reportedly entering the Transfer Portal
Hokies redshirt sophomore tight end Zeke Wimbush is reportedly entering the Transfer Portal, and it should not come as a surprise. He was buried on Virginia Tech's depth chart the last couple of seasons behind Benji Gosnell and Ja'Ricous Hairston.
The 6-foot-2, 246-pound Wimbush played in 24 games for the Hokies and will have two years of eligibility remaining, according to Kolby Crawford of VTScoop. The tight end position was not heavily utilized over the last couple of seasons, whether under former offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen or Philip Montgomery. To Montgomery's credit, he used it more than Bowen did before he left to become the offensive line coach at Ohio State back in February.
Franklin flipped Class of 2026 tight end Pierce Petersohn from Penn State to Virginia Tech shortly after he was hired to add a room that will be heavily involved in the offense under Franklin and new offensive coordinator Ty Howle. Hairston came up with some big catches this season and some touchdowns from quarterback Kyron Drones. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Hokies target a tight end in the portal when it opens.
