Over the last couple of seasons, the running back position has been a big part of the Virginia Tech football team's offense. However, the Hokies are going through a transition between the NFL Draft and the transfer portal.
Bhayhsul Tuten did most of the work over the last two seasons with Malachi Thomas sprinkled in with contributions. Tuten is likely to head to the NFL Draft. Thomas has entered the portal to find a new home for next season, leaving head coach Brent Pry and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen with Jeremiah Coney and P.J. Prioleau as the two backs. You can forget about incoming freshman Jeff Overton who the coaches expect to make an impact next fall.
There is plenty of transfer portal needed once again for Virginia Tech this time. A player who entered the portal recently has ties to a Hokies’ assistant coach and will be an instant big-time contributor for next season.
Virginia Tech must make a strong move Roman Hemby
Maryland running back Roman Hemby entered the transfer portal and he has strong ties to Virginia Tech running backs coach Elijah Brooks at Maryland. Brooks worked with Hemby and he has turned into a very good back both running the ball and receiving.

The last three years, he’s racked up totals of 3,196 scrimmage yards (2,276 rushing and 920 receiving) along with 25 touchdowns.… pic.twitter.com/AYAP9yDcew
In three years with the Terrapins, Hemby had nearly 3,200 all-purpose yards with 2,276 coming on the ground and just over 900 in receiving with 25 touchdowns. Those stats were mostly compiled in Big Ten play.
Pry added Tuten through the portal a couple of years ago from North Carolina A&T and in fact, he’s added most of his skilled players the last couple of seasons through the portal. Overton, Prioleau, and Coney don’t bring a ton of experience to begin next season which is why getting Hermby would be huge for the Hokies. Unless Tuten decides to play in the bowl game, Coney will get a chunk of the carries against Minnesota on Jan. 3 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and will be a good showcase for him.
