Going into James Franklin's first fall camp at Virginia Tech, some freshmen were making some waves. Truth be told, it wouldn't have been surprising to see one or two crack the two-deep depth chart for the opener against VMI.
Earlier this week, Franklin said at his first game-week press conference that he was not releasing a depth chart for the opener against the Keydets. However, the reports out of camp that were happening all of last month were that freshman Davion Brown was making some serious waves. It appears that in the end, he made more than enough of an impression for when the depth chart was finally dropped for the season opener.

A couple of hours before the opener against VMI, Andy Bitter of Tech Sideline posted on his X account the Virginia Tech depth chart that Franklin promised they would have earlier this week, and it revealed that Brown was starting at wide receiver, along with Ayden Green and Duke transfer Que'Sean Brown.
Brown has been a handful in camp for the Virginia Tech defensive backs, especially the veteran players. He came to Virginia Tech, following Franklin from Penn State after originally committing there before Franklin was fired, but like nearly a dozen of the Class of 2026 recruits, he is now in Blacksburg, ready to make an immediate impact.
The wide receiver room for the Hokies this season is new, and another surprise on the depth chart is former quarterback A.J. Brand, who made the position switch from under center to wide receiver in the spring and is on the two-deep chart behind Greene. One other noticeable position battle on the two-deep chart is Harrison Saint Germain as the second tight end behind Penn State transfer Luke Reynolds, ahead of Benji Gosnell.
