The transfer portal has been open for seven days and players are starting to commit to new schools for the 2025 season. As far as Virginia Tech goes, they have been quiet in terms of getting commitments from the portal so far. That hasn’t been the case for Virginia.

Like Hokies’ coach Brent Pry, the heat is on Virginia coach Tony Elliott for the upcoming season after another season where the Cavaliers are missing out on bowl eligibility. Like Tech, Virginia has lost some key players to the portal, including quarterback Anthony Colandrea. The outspoken signal caller did not play in their regular season loss, 37-17, in Blacksburg a couple of weeks ago. It didn’t take Elliott long to find a new QB for next season.

Virginia lands North Texas transfer QB

One of the top quarterbacks in the portal from a statistical perspective, Chandler Morris of North Texas, has committed to Virginia on Monday, giving the Cavaliers a player under center with a strong arm. This feels like a big addition for Elliott.

Morris ranks with some of the best quarterbacks this season in terms of stats. He finished fourth nationally with 31 touchdown passes, finishing behind Colorado’s Shedueur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward, and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik. Morris finished fifth nationally with 314 yards a game through the air.

Morris has just one year of eligibility remaining and he’ll be looking to end the Cavaliers bowl drought. Elliott clearly is feeling the heat in Charlottesville and making quick moves in the portal as he has added some pieces to get the Cavaliers over the hump in 2025. There is still time left in the portal, but right now, Virginia is quickly closing the gap on the Hokies this off-season just a week into the portal.
