Coming off a pair of wins over Wofford and North Carolina State, the Virginia Tech football team was looking for a third straight win on Saturday at Lane Stadium against Wake Forest. Turnovers, penalties, and undisciplined football all added up to a 30-23 loss.

It felt like the Hokies from the first three games of the 2025 season were back under Brent Pry. Mistakes, penalties, and the inability to score touchdowns doomed Virginia Tech against the Demon Deacons. Now at 2-4, the Hokies will travel to Atlanta on Saturday afternoon to face Georgia Tech, and Philip Montgomery's team is a major underdog.

Virginia Tech opens as double-digit underdog at Georgia Tech

After Saturday's loss, DraftKings has made Virginia Tech a 14.5 underdog heading to play the 5-0 Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech will be coming off its first bye of the season after escaping Winston-Salem last weekend with an overtime win over Wake Forest.

The sizable line is not surprising as the Yellow Jackets are contenders in the ACC this year and playing at home. They are also looking for revenge for a loss last season, 21-6, in Blacksburg in late October. They are also facing a Virginia Tech dealing with injuries and questions surrounding the roster as the 30-day transfer portal window remains in effect following Brent Pry's firing last month.

After two wins, it was frustrating for Hokies fans to watch them give away 17 points to the Demon Deacons, 14 on penalties, where Wake Forest was facing a third down and three off an early Kyron Drones interception. Virginia Tech's defense committing two unnecessary penalties, giving Wake Forest first downs after forcing fourth downs, was what was more frustrating than anything.

Georgia Tech is going to be a very difficult game for the Hokies, who have six games left in 2025 before big changes are coming.
