There were a lot of questions surrounding James Franklin and the Virginia Tech football team heading into their first road game of the season at Maryland. A Big Ten opponent in a true road game in a sold-out stadium, anything was possible.
Considering that a lot of the sell-out crowd was Virginia Tech fans, it felt like a home game at times. Virginia Tech jumped out to a 35-14 lead in the third quarter and held off a late Terrapins rally for a 35-26 victory. The Hokies improved to 3-0 and will open up ACC play next weekend in Chestnut Hill against 2-1 Boston College. Virginia Tech has opened as a double-digit favorite against the Eagles.

According to DraftKings, the Hokies are a 14-point favorite next Saturday afternoon at Boston College. There are a couple of factors that go into that line. Virginia Tech is coming off a statement road win over an undefeated Big Ten team, while the Eagles struggled with Maine out of the FCS.
Regardless, this isn't a game the Hokies should overlook with Pittsburgh coming to Blacksburg the following Friday night. BC is a new-looking team under O'Brien, and their win over Rutgers at home was an impressive one. BC has a new signal caller in Mason McKenzie, who is a true dual-threat quarterback, something that has given the Hokies issues in past seasons.
He only rushed for 53 yards against the Black Bears, while throwing for 173 yards, and was 14-for-21 against Maine. Both Eagles touchdowns came in the first quarter, and a safety gave them a 16-0 lead. They only managed two field goals the rest of the game.
Virginia Tech will be coming off a strong performance against Maryland in their first matchup against a Power 4 Conference foe, while BC lost their season opener to Cincinnati in Ohio and beat Rutgers in their second Power 4 Conference game. O'Brien and the Eagles still have one more non-conference game against Notre Dame later this season. As far as the Hokies go, they need to go on the road, ignore the line, and take care of business in their first ACC game of the season.
