Things started as good as they could for the Virginia Tech softball team in 2025. The Hokies won their first eight games by shutout, which included two perfect games from pitcher Emma Lemley. Then things got bumpy this past weekend in their final two games at LSU.

The Tigers handed the Hokies their first two losses of the season, 7-2, on Saturday night, then, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon when they hit Lemley hard. Following the two losses, Virginia Tech remained in the Top 25, coming in at No. 16 by D1Softball and No. 19 by Softball America.

The Hokies will be off until the weekend when they head to Alabama for five more games this weekend in SEC country. They will play Drake and Alabama on Friday, then Southern Utah in a doubleheader on Saturday. They will close the weekend on Sunday with one more game against Alabama.

College Football Playoff expansion?

This past season was the first of the new 12-team College Football Playoff and you can say it was a smashing success. Ohio State rolled through the field and then beat Notre Dame to capture the championship. Despite all the success, there is already talk about expanding the field to 14 or 16 teams.

Of course, the SEC and Big Ten are leading the charge for playoff expansion, but it feels like the ACC has to go along with what the conferences want to do. Winning solves all for the ACC to get multiple teams in the field, but make no mistake about it, CFP expansion is bound to happen again, sooner rather than later.

Lacrosse routs Elon

The Hokies women's lacrosse team picked up their second straight win on Tuesday, beating Elon, 16-4, on the road three days after taking down Mercer, 11-7, at home on Saturday. Mia Pozzi led Virginia Tech (3-1) with six goals and Maura O'Malley added four. Tech will open ACC play on Saturday at home against Pittsburgh.
