Earlier this week, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team had three players enter the transfer portal, wings Jaydon Young and Rodney Brown, Jr., along with center Patrick Wessler. Brown Jr. and Wessler entering the portal was not surprising, but you can make the case that Young was.
Head coach Mike Young spoke last week about needing to get more talent on the roster for next season and beyond. Two days after three players entered the portal, the Hokies are losing a fourth with point guard Brandon Rechsteiner entering.

This will be the second point guard and fourth in the last two seasons that Virginia Tech has lost. Rodney Rice entered the portal prior to last season and then last season's point guard, Sean Pedulla, entered the portal last March. In October, Mike Young dismissed Temple transfer Hysier Miller from the team and now Rechsteiner enters. That leaves freshman Ben Hammond as the only one left in the program, assuming he doesn't leave.
Rechsteiner started the season in Miller's place for the Hokies, but by the New Year, Mike Young inserted Hammond as the starter and the Virginia native played really well to the point where he played a lot of key minutes down the stretch of the game for Virginia Tech.
In 32 games this season, Rechsteiner averaged 22 minutes and seven points a game. He kept his team in the game against California in the ACC Tournament last week by dropping 19 points on the Golden Bears including some key 3-pointers. He was also one of the better free throws shooters, sealing a February win at Notre Dame with late key free throws.
Hammond has two years of eligibility remaining, but all eyes will now shift to Hammond as to whether or not he stays in Blacksburg. Regardless, Mike Young continues to have his work cut out for himself with the transfer portal again.
