We are less than three weeks away from the 2024-25 college basketball seasons beginning for both the men and women. Virginia Tech's two teams will open at home on Nov. 4 with the women playing UNC Wilmington, while the men will play Delaware State.

Both teams went through massive roster turnover following last season and for different reasons. The men saw a mass exodus following their elimination in the second round of the NIT which forced Mike Young to work hard in the transfer portal. The women saw head coach Kenny Brooks leave for Kentucky, as did Georgia Amoore and Clara Strack. The Hokies also lost Elizabeth Kitley and Cayla King to graduation.

All of those losses and changes are going to be felt this season and Tuesday night, the ACC Preseason Men's and Women's Basketball Polls were released and both had a tough outlook for the two teams this upcoming winter.

Virginia Tech men & women's basketball teams picked in the bottom half of the ACC

In the overall big picture, it's not surprising that both teams are picked to finish in the bottom half of the standings this season. The ACC for the men is loaded and the women's side of the conference is just as deep and talented.

On the men's side, Young's team is picked to finish 14th out of 18 teams with SMU, Stanford, and California joining the conference this season. Florida State, California, Stanford, and Boston College are picked to finish lower than the Hokies with Duke the preseason favorite.

On the women's side, Megan Duffy is in her first season in Blacksburg after coming over from Marquette, and her Hokies are picked to finish 12th. To no one's surprise, Notre Dame was the preseason favorite to win the ACC with all they talent they have coming back.

It wouldn't be surprising to see the women finish the season a little above of where they're picked, but the men are a huge question mark. Just how long will it take the new team to come together and mesh? That will have a huge role in where they end up.
