While things were going off the rails on Saturday night at Lane Stadium for the Virginia Tech football team against Vanderbilt in the second half, a former Hokies legend picked up his first college coaching victory not too far away.

While the Commodores were running all over and dominating Virginia Tech in Blacksburg over the final 30 minutes of a 44-20 victory, Michael Vick picked up his first coaching victory for Norfolk State with a dramatic 34-31 win in overtime over Division 2 Virginia State.

After losing to Towson in his opener nine days ago in a very frustrating fashion, Vick regrouped his team that he took over in December, and picked up his first win. It wasn't easy, however, as they had to rally from a late-game deficit.

Tied at 24, Virginia State took the lead with 2:14 left on a touchdown, but the Spartans tied the game with 53 seconds left when Jaylen Laudermilk scored on a 33-yard touchdown run. Then Vick had to avoid another heartbreaking loss as Virginia State had a game-winning field goal attempt from 46 yards out that hit the crossbar, which forced overtime.

In the extra session, Norfolk State forced the Trojans to turn the ball over on downs in overtime before Evan Helfrich drilled a game-winning 29-yard field goal to set off a celebration. The win completed a second-half comeback that saw Norfolk State rally with 21 fourth-quarter points to force overtime.

Michael Vick has as many one-score wins as Brent Pry at Virginia Tech

The win was a one-score victory, which is always nice to win, but in just two games, Vick has as many one-score wins as Brent Pry does at Virginia Tech in three-plus seasons. The talent level and competition level are different, but numbers don't lie. It was the first of what Vick hopes will be many wins as a college football head coach, but he got the weight lifted off his shoulders by collecting his first win.
