Virginia Tech LB suffers another long-term injury that will test Hokies' depth

Just brutal news.

Going into the 2026 season, there was hope that linebacker Gabe Williams was going to be able to finally get on the field for Virginia Tech. His first two seasons in Blacksburg have been nothing short of frustrating.

He had his 2024 season cut short after just two games in November, in a game at home against Clemson that the Hokies lost, when he suffered a season-ending injury. Then, the most horrific tragedy struck as his father passed away a couple of weeks later after suffering a stroke and brain aneurysm during a home game in November.

After years of frustration and heartbreak, the Bowie, Maryland, native has reportedly been hit with more bad luck. On Friday, Andy Bitter of Tech Sideline reported that a Virginia Tech team spokesman said that Williams was going to be out with a long-term injury. First-year head coach James Franklin confirmed it when he met with the media late Friday afternoon.

There is no doubt that Williams was expected to be a part of the rotation this fall for new defensive coordinator Brent Pry. According to Bitter, Williams wasn't part of the linebacker grouping at practice last week

Injuries are going to happen in camp; it's just the nature of the sport. However, to see one happen to Williams is heartbreaking for a kid who has already dealt with too much in his short college career.

As for the linebacker position, depth was going to be needed, and it is compounded by Williams' injury. Kaleb Spencer, Noah Chambers, Keon Wylie, Sherrod Covil Jr., George Ballance, and Curtis Jones Jr. have all been working out there as the position continues to be evaluated. Covil Jr. could also drop back and take some snaps in the secondary as well.
