We are a month into the men's basketball transfer portal being open, and Virginia Tech coach Mike Young has a pair of commitments from West Virginia transfer Amani Hansberry and Delaware's Izaiah Pasha.
Both players are going fill two big needs the Hokies have in the front court and backcourt and in the case of Hansberry, he'll be an even bigger addition if Tobi Lawal, who is going through the NBA Draft process, decides that he's not returning for his senior yea rnad stays in the draft. He has said that he is holding onto this one year of remaining eligibility and would play in Blacksburg if he returns to college.
Young still has a handful of needs and positions that he needs to attack still in the portal, and one of them is St. John's transfer Simeon Wilcher, who has narrowed his list of schools down to seven teams with Virginia Tech in the mix, according to one college basketball insider.
Virginia Tech in the mix for St. John's Simeon Wilcher
The Hokies can use more guards for their backcourt with sophomore Ben Hammond and Pasha. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, they are in the mix for Wilcher and are part of his final seven schools. Also in the mix are Pittsburgh out of the ACC, along with BYU, Maryland, Texas, Oregon, and Ole Miss.
This season for Rick Pitino and the Storm, Wilcher averaged eight points a game, 1.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 41% from the field. The 6-foot-4 New Jersey native averaged 25 minutes a night for St. John's and had 13 points in a forst-round NCAA Tournament win over Omaha.
Coming out of high school, Wilcher was a four-star according to 247Sports and is a smooth ball handler who sees the floor well running the point, something the Hokies need more of, and he would be a great fit should Virginia Tech land him.
