Things are rocky right now in Blacksburg when it comes to the Virginia Tech football program under head coach Brent Pry. Beginning Year 4 in charge of the Hokies, the former Penn State defensive coordinator is not alone in being under the microscope. Joining him is AD Whit Babcock.
Recently, Babcock revealed that he's going to take a deep dive into who is on the schedule to get more marquee contests that will drive high TV numbers. Talk about something long overdue and a little late in the game, but here we are, finally, I guess.
“It’s a new world and a new way of distributing revenue, and it’s sent us back to put a magnifying glass on the schedule,'' said Babcock. "When we perform well, we are one of the top-tier brands in the league from a viewership standpoint.”
Well, he's not wrong, however, the performance has been a big issue. Last season was supposed to be the season when they performed well and didn't, again. It was maybe the biggest letdown of a season in Blacksburg in some time, and that's saying a lot with the recent seasons fans have had to endure. Something tells me this is a vital digging assignment for Babcock and his future, along with Pry's going forward.
Virginia Tech men's hoop in attendance for 4-star Class of 2026 recruit
One player who is generating a ton of interest in the Class of 2026 is four-star DaKari Spear. One of the top guards in the class and ranked 28th in ESPN's Top 100, Spear has a lot of the top schools in the mix for him, and recently, Virginia Tech joined the mix.
The Hokies were the latest to offer Spear on May 22 and were in attendance recently with a loaded list of schools. Spear is one of the most sought-after players in the Class of 2026, and Virginia Tech has its work cut out for itself if they are going to be in the mix until he makes his decision.
Virginia Tech softball picks up first transfer portal commit
It's been two weeks since the Virginia Tech softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Alabama, and since that Sunday night, the Hokies have lost a couple of players to the transfer portal along with their outgoing seniors. Head coach Pete D'Amour picked up the first portal commit of the offseason as he begins piecing together his roster for 2026.
Former Stetson standout Addison Foster announced on her X account that she's committed to the Hokies and is making the jump from the Atlantic Sun Conference to the ACC. For the Hatters this season as a sophomore, she finished with a .411 batting average with 12 doubles, 45 RBIs in 56 games. She does have two years of eligibility left.
NC State picks up rivals transfer
Only in this current state of college basketball can you have a men's basketball player leave North Carolina for North Carolina State. I mean, the only other destination to make it even crazier would be if he went to Duke.
Ven-Allen Lubin, who averaged 8.7 points and 5.5 rebounds a game last season for the Tar Heels, is heading to join the Wolfpack in an interesting move. NC State under Will Wade might be a problem for the ACC next season.
