When the ACC decided to go to nine conference games in football beginning in 2026, that meant schools would play three non-conference games and nine conference games. That meant that Virginia Tech was going to have to drop one of its four scheduled non-conference games this upcoming fall.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Virginia Tech and James Madison were canceling their game in Blacksburg in September. That leaves the Hokies' non-conference games next season being VMI, Old Dominion at home, and a trip to Maryland. Instead of coming to Blacksburg, the Dukes will travel to San Diego State for a non-conference game on Sept. 26.
Women's basketball visits SMU
After two straight wins over Syracuse and Boston College, the Hokies women's basketball team will visit second-year ACC member SMU on Thursday night. It comes 24 hours after the Hokies' men play in the same arena. After hitting a bump in the New Year with losses to Miami and Louisville, Virginia Tech has bounced back nicely, and beating the Mustangs is a must to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
Isaiah Spencer hits football portal, commits hours later
It was reported by Pete Nakos of On3 on Wednesday afternoon that Virginia Tech wide receiver Isaiah Spencer was hitting the portal after just one season in Blacksburg. A few hours later, Hayes Fawcett of On3 reported that he was committed to Ole Miss. That might be the quickest portal movement in hours.
Between Jackson State and Virginia Tech, Spencer had 73 catches for 1,061 yards and five touchdowns. For the Hokies, he had 14 catches for 194 yards and was returning punts at the end of the season.
Spring Game date announced
New Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin will have his first Spring Game in Blacksburg on April 18. The time will be announced at a later date, but it'll be free to the public and will have an afternoon kick-off time. This should be an exciting time as Franklin is reshaping the roster for the 2026 season with a ton of transfers and some promising incoming freshmen.
