It's hard to believe, but Friday night was the regular-season final for the Virginia Tech men's soccer team when they hosted Syracuse at Thompson Field. It was a game that the Hokies needed to win for multiple reasons.

First, it would have all but locked up a first-round home game in the ACC Tournament that begins this week, and second, it would have strengthened their résumé for the NCAA Tournament later this month. After a scoreless first half, the Hokies and Orange exchanged goals in the second half before Tech potted the game-winner for a 2-1 victory.

That win, along with other results across the conference, landed Virginia Tech with the 6th seed in the conference tourney, and they will host North Carolina State on Wednesday in Blacksburg at 6 p.m. The Hokies are 8-5-3 overall and finished 4-2-2 in the ACC in what was a great regular season. The Hokies and Wolfpack tied in Raleigh back in September, 1-1.

Virginia Tech opened the scoring in the 48th minute with Syracuse giving up an own goal, but the Orange tied the game in the 64th minute on a Brysin Rodriguez goal. In the 69th minute, the Hokies buried the game-winner when Alex Perez scored the deciding goal on a volley shot from inside the Syracuse box. The winner of the Virginia Tech/NC State matchup will play the winner of another first-round match on Wednesday between Wake Forest and Boston College.

Virginia Tech volleyball picks up ACC upset

Things haven't been going too well for the Hokies volleyball team not only this season, but in recent seasons. However, small steps are being made this season, and on Friday night, the Hokies did something that they haven't done since 2022, they have posted back-to-back ACC wins.

Hosting Florida State at Cassell Coliseum, the Hokies edged the Seminoles in the first two matches. After FSU won the third, Virginia Tech secured the 3-1 win with a 25-20 Game 4. That win comes after a win last Sunday at Syracuse. The last time the Hokies won back-to-back ACC matches was four years ago; they took down Duke and Wake Forest.

Reese Hazelton had 14 kills and 16 digs to lead Virginia Tech, which improved to 7-13 overall and 4-7 in the ACC. Camilla Brandalise had 41 assists and 13 digs as the Hokies finished with 56 kills, 49 assists, 63 digs, and 8.5 blocks. Virginia Tech will host Miami on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

Is Philip Rivers as the next NC State football head coach?

It was a little surprising to see NC State fire Dave Doeren last weekend after a loss at Stanford. However, they moved on from their veteran coach and according to On3, the former Wolfpack signal caller is emerging as the focus of the school's search for the next coach. Rivers is the head coach at St. Michael High School and spoke about the opening after a game on Friday night. This was rather telling, if we're being honest. Who will be the next ACC coach fired?
