With college football camps in full swing, preseason award watch lists are being released day by day. On Tuesday, Virginia Tech running back Marcellous Hawkins was the latest to land on a watch llist, this one for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy.
It is given annually to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership and performance on and off the field. Named after Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Danny Wuerffel, the award reflects his lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and unity. There were 113 players nominated for the award, which will be handed out on Dec. 11 on The Home Depot College Football Awards show.
Defensive lineman Kemari Copeland has been listed on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Outland Trophy Watch Lists. Copeland and linebacker Kaleb Spencer were both named to the Freaks Lists by The Athletic recently as well.
Tremaine Edmunds is impressing new teammates
When the Chicago Bears released former Virginia Tech standout linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, it was very surprising. He is in camp with the New York Giants, and he should be a big contributor for first-year coach John Harbaugh. He is making some quick impressions, including with Arvell Reese.
"He's a great player, a great leader,'' Reese said.
Edmunds had some very big games for the Bears, which is what made his release that more surprising. Landing with the Giants in New York is a landing spot where Edmunds can look to thrive in beginning in 2026.

- Blake Toppmeyer of USA Today didn't beat around the bush when it came to three ACC football coaches going into the 2026 season. Toppmeyer predicted that Mike Norvell at Florida State would be the first coach to be fired. Luke Fickell (Wisconsin), Dave Aranda (Baylor), Mike Locksley (Maryland), Bill Belichick (North Carolina) and Shane Beamer (South Carolina) were also listed by Toppmeyer as being on the hot seat. There really isn't much surprise with any of those. Virginia Tech will visit Locksley and Maryland on Sept. 19 for a non-conference game.
- CBS Sports picked Virginia as the best college football team and program in the Commonwealth going into the 2026 season. At least Hokies fans live with that. How would you like to be a Boston College fan? Austin Nivison of CBS Sports picked Harvard as the top program in Massachusetts. Nivision noted that BC and UMass combined for two wins last season, both by Boston College. For the record, former Virginia Tech quarterback Pop Watson is taking over the reins at UMass this season after transferring back home in the portal back in January.
- The Hokies men's soccer team will play its season opener in just eight days on Aug. 20 in Columbus, Ohio, against Ohio State out of the Big Ten at 8 p.m. on B1G+.
