Coming off back-to-back losses to Pittsburgh and California, the Virginia Tech football team was looking to rebound at home on Saturday afternoon against Georgia Tech. The Hokies jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead before having to hold off a second-half Yellow Jackets punch for a 34-24 victory at Lane Stadium to improve to 5-2.

Virginia Tech's offense was clicking behind quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer and wide receiver Que'Sean Brown, as well as running back Jeffrey Overton Jr. On the defensive side, the Hokies forced a couple of Georgia Tech turnovers, while Brown had a good day returning punts, including one for 63 yards, coming up short of a touchdown.

Kicker John Love even got back on track after missing his last three field goals, with two in the win. Head coach James Franklin didn't mince words after the game about the way his team won the game.

“I just love that all three phases really found a way to have a positive factor in the game,” Franklin said. “Obviously, there are things that we’ve got to get cleaned up, but I’m very, very pleased with how all three phases had a factor in the game.”

Playing well in all three phases is not something the Hokies have done in their last two games, and it showed. They'll look to continue that on Saturday night at Clemson before their bye at the end of the month.

James Franklin would never

If there is one area that Franklin has had a lot of success in during his coaching career, it is recruiting. Virginia Tech fans are getting an up-close look at that since he was hired last November in Blacksburg. However, what happened to Matt Campbell on Sunday would never have happened to Franklin at Penn State.

Four-star Class of 2027 quarterback Will Wood from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Mass., flipped his commitment from Campbell and the Nittany Lions to Boston College. That's right, in this day and age of NIL, Penn State had a commit in football flip to Boston College. That would have never happened to Franklin while he was in State College. You have to also remember that Penn State fans wanted Will Wood over Peter Bourque, who committed to Franklin and Virginia Tech.
