It was a busy weekend surrounding Virginia Tech athletics on the court and the mat. Let's dive into the latest with this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News.
Jaydon Young & Tyler Johnson step up in Cal win
Talking about gutting out a much-needed win. The Hokies men's basketball team built a 22-point second-half lead at California on Saturday night, only to see the Golden Bears rally to tie the game. To Virginia Tech's credit, they rebounded and left with a 71-68 win to split their two-game road trip.
Two players went under the radar in playing a big part in the win. Freshman Tyler Johnson had 11 points while shooting 5-for-7 from the field and he grabbed 12 rebounds. He also had the job of guarding Cal's stud guard Andrej Stojakovic who finished with 24 points, but his shot at the buzzer from in front of the Golden Bears bench from behind the arc rimmed out. Johnson made Stojakovic work for everything he got and was huge on the boards for the Hokies.
“(Johnson) did an exceptional job,” praised Young after the game. “He let (Stojakovic) get back to his left hand a couple of times in the second half, but take not one thing away from Tyler and his work. He was on point, he did a great job on the glass and we needed it.''
Off the bench, Jaydon Young had his best offensive game at Virginia Tech. He dropped a career-high 13 points and getting that production from him off the bench going forward would be huge.
Wrestling falls at North Carolina
On Friday night, the Hokies wrestling team dropped an ACC match at North Carolina, 20-17. They fell to 3-2 overall and will return to the mat on Sunday, Jan. 19 in Boone, N.C. at Appalachian State at 3 o'clock.
