After rolling to a 44-21 non-conference win over Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium, first-year Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin wasn't happy with everything that happened. That's what good coaches do: look at the big picture. He wasn't even happy in some areas after a season-opening 73-3 rout of VMI in Week 1.
Franklin was not happy with Montavious Cunningham getting ejected from the game for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Virginia Tech also turned the ball over a couple of times and got a huge punt return from Duke transfer Que'Sean Brown to the ODU 1-yard line, but the Hokies had to settle for just a field goal. It might be ok against the Monarchs, but against future opponents on the schedule, finishing that off with a touchdown will be key.
"We make mistakes, all of us, myself included," Franklin said. "When you make a mistake, you man up to it, you own it, you take responsibility, and you move forward. We'll learn from it and move forward."
Expect those mistakes to be brought up this week and addressed before going to Maryland this upcoming weekend for a matchup with the 2-0 Terrapins.
Pop Watson powers UMass to a 2-0 start
After leading UMass to a stunning season-opening win over Rutgers on the road in Week 1, former Virginia Tech quarterback Pop Watson gave the Minutemen fans something they have been waiting years for: a winning streak.
Watson was 9-for-10 for 152 yards and a touchdown through the air while rushing for 40 yards on four carries and a touchdown in a 37-10 win over Sacred Heart at home on Saturday afternoon. UMass has a legit shot at beginning the season at 3-0 this upcoming weekend when they host Stonehill. The Minutemen have a chance to become bowl-eligible under Watson this season, which would be a huge feat for a program that has been stuck spinning its wheels in the middle of nowhere.

- The disappointing beginning to the season continues for the Hokies volleyball team. Playing three games this past weekend in the Northwestern Invitational, Virginia Tech lost all three matches they played: 3-0 to Northwestern, 3-2 to Wisconsin-Green Bay, and 3-1 to Long Island. Falling to 3-5 overall, the Hokies visit South Carolina for a non-conference match on Friday night.
- For the first time since 2014, the Virginia Tech men's soccer team beat Wake Forest, 2-1, on Sunday night at Thompson Field for their first ACC win of the season. Noe Uwimana opened the scoring in the 6th minute for the Hokies before Chas Vazquez tallied the second goal in the 16th minute. The Demon Deacons scored in the 44th minute of the opening half, but Tech's defense was stout in the second half. At 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the ACC, Virginia Tech travels to Duke on Friday night for their next match.
- According to David Cunningham of Tech Sideline, the Hokies' game at Maryland on Saturday night will be on FS1, with Colorado and Northwestern going on FOX in the same time slot.
