On Thursday, the Virginia Tech football team began their trip out west to Northern California for Saturday afternoon's ACC game at California. The Hokies will be looking to rebound from their first loss of the season against Pittsburgh last Friday night at Lane Stadium. However, as it turns out, this is not only a game trip for James Franklin, but it is also one where he'll get to see a key Class of 2027 commit in person.

Back in the spring, Franklin picked up a pivotal commitment from four-star quarterback Peter Bourque of Tabor Academy over Penn State and Georgia. The former Michigan commit reopened his recruiting after Sherrone Moore was fired in Ann Arbor last December.

Tabor plays at Oak Ridge School in El Dorado Hills, California, about an hour away from Berkeley. Franklin is reportedly going to make the trip to see the game before Saturday's game against the Golden Bears. Talk about a 2-for-1 trip for Franklin.

Mike Young looking for one bit of luck in 2026-27

Last season, right before the ACC slate began for Mike Young and the Virginia Tech men's basketball team, injuries hit and hit hard. Tyler Johnson was lost before the First of the Year and didn't come back until late February. This season, Young is hoping for one thing to be different than last year: health.

"Let's hope we have some good fortune and we can keep them healthy," Young said at ACC Media Days earlier this week. "That was as frustrating and as debilitating as anything I've experienced in 25 years as a head coach, what we went through last year. We're in good health now."

There is some buzz surrounding the Hokies this winter, and they saw last season what injuries can do to a team. The NCAA Tournament field is expanding to 76 teams, and that opens the door for more teams to have something to play for down the stretch of the season and when it comes to conference tournaments.
